Walmart's Comparative Scale

In 2010, Walmart earned more than all of the following retailers combined - on slightly less revenue.

Costco
Target
Best Buy
Sears Holdings
Amazon
Macy's
the TJX companies
Kohls
JC Penney
Gap Inc
Toys R US
Dollar General,
BJ'S Wholesale
Nordstrom
Limited Brands companies
Bed Bath & Beyond
Family Dollar
Ross Stores,
Dillard's
Petsmart, and
Foot Locker

While it may be vicious, the fight is increasingly one-sided.

Note that all these companies are not necessarily competeing for the same demographic. For example, customers of Costco and Norsdtroms have more than double the family income of Walmart customers. Nonetheless, with that lower-end economic demographic, Walmart out-earns all the rest of these national competitors put together.

Walmart doesn't seem to engage so much in smaller skirmishes. It obliterates categories, especially where it can affect and even redefine the supply chain.

But the Sears, Penney's, Macy's and such, as important as they seem to be, are small players in the larger picture. Watch for the pending Walmart-Tesco-Carrefour smack-down - where the real future of retailing will unfold.
